Hatteras Village Offshore Open Brings Offshore Tournament Action Back to the Outer Banks
Every spring, the offshore fishing world turns its attention to the southern end of North Carolina’s Outer Banks as the Hatteras Village Offshore Open returns to the docks of Hatteras Village for another week of competitive Gulf Stream fishing, community tradition, and some of the best offshore action on the East Coast.
Known simply as the HVOO throughout the fishing community, the tournament has become one of North Carolina’s premier offshore events, drawing teams from across the region to compete for blue marlin, white marlin, tuna, dolphin, and wahoo while experiencing everything that makes Hatteras Village such a unique destination.
Located at the very end of Hatteras Island, Hatteras Village has long been one of the most respected sportfishing communities on the East Coast. Built around charter fishing, commercial fishing, boat building, and generations of watermen, the village offers a true offshore fishing culture that still feels authentic to its roots. During tournament week, the marinas, docks, restaurants, and waterfront throughout the village come alive as anglers, crews, families, and fans gather to celebrate another season on the water.
The Hatteras Village Offshore Open has continued to grow over the years while maintaining the atmosphere that makes it special. Teams compete not only for substantial payouts and tournament titles, but also for valuable points in the North Carolina Billfish Series, which officially begins with the HVOO each season.
The North Carolina Billfish Series brings together many of the state’s top offshore tournaments into a season-long points championship recognizing the best teams, boats, charter operations, and anglers in North Carolina billfishing. The series is operated by longtime weighmasters George Lott and Randy Gregory, who have become well known throughout the offshore community for managing weigh-ins and tournament operations across the state.
Beyond the fishing itself, the HVOO also continues to support the local community. Tournament proceeds benefit the Hatteras Village Civic Association, helping fund scholarships for local students along with community programs and charitable initiatives throughout Hatteras Village.
