Choosing Line & Leader For North Carolina Trophy Red Drum

Choosing The Line & Leader For North Carolina Trophy Red Drum

As most of you are aware, we are based out of Morehead City, N.C. Within 30 minutes of our office is the Neuse River/Pamlico Sound, home of the Trophy Red Drum (also called Old Drum).

In the months of July-September, the fish migrate to the Pamlico and Neuse River area to spawn.

This fishery is truly world-class.

Frequently, we are asked how to target and catch NC Old Red Drum.

First, it’s important to use the right gear to target the fish. Catching them is fun, but you must be respectful of the fishery by handling these fish with care. Using the right tackle so the fish are not hurt during the fight is very important.

Targeting Old Drum with popping corks and soft plastics is our preferred method. The #1 question asked is what line and leader to use.

Start with spooling up 5500 series reel with Seaguar 50 lb Threadlock Braid. The strength of these drum is surprising. Be sure the line can handle the head shakes, power, and fight ahead.

Our fluorocarbon of choice is Seaguar Gold Label 40lb. Gold Label is the thinnest 100% fluorocarbon leader made by Seaguar.

Not only are thinner leaders less visible underwater, but also they give the advantage of more natural presentations and better catch-rates on finicky fish.
