The 2013 Salty Fly Tournament appears to have been a BIG success for Sam Root. The event took place at Little Harbor in Ruskin, Florida.
The Salty Fly Tournament is only three years old and most are calling it the “Largest Saltwater Fly Fishing Tournament In the World”. The event has grown from 45 boats to an 80-boat field of two-man teams. We had the opportunity to talk with Sam at the Miami Boat Show and he told us “It sold out in 41 minutes, with 49 alternates waiting in case any of those 80 boats dropped out.” Sam also made the rules easy. Add the total inches of two redfish and one trout, take of photo of the catch and release!
When we asked Sam about the success of his tournament he said “It is all about having fun!” It appears Sam has done just that! Sam works hard with sponsors to make it fun, tons of giveaways (who does not like giveaways) and great food! The event also host a popular skiff Casting and Poling challenge sponsored by G.Loomis.

The fly fishing conditions were tough for the 80 boat field but Cody Chivas and Chris Cenci took home first place with a total of 83 inches. Chivas and Cenci received $1,500 in cash as well as sponsorship gifts.
First Place: Team Slayer Inc. Cody Chivas and Chris Cenci
Second Place: Team Cheap Rum
Third Place: Team Carbon Marine with Dave Preston and Joe Welbourn
Fourth Place: Team Strip N Feed Research
Fifth Place Team Bending Branches Jim Rutledges and Jon Clarkson
We will have Sam Root LIVE on the PointClickFish.com Radio Show tonight to discuss the tournament and what he has planned for 2014!
